Darren Bent says it is a “surprise” Frank Lampard has not yet managed Rangers or fierce rivals Celtic.

Lampard has had a relatively underwhelming coaching career to date at Derby County, Chelsea and Everton.

The Englishman held talks over succeeding Michael Beale at Ibrox last year [Daily Record], but the club instead appointed Philippe Clement.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive [6 June, 18:30pm], Bent said of out-of-work Lampard: “I’m pretty sure he’ll get an opportunity at some point.

“He then has to deliver after the Derby, Chelsea and Everton situations. It’s about getting back in. It’s a surprise he hasn’t gone the Scottish route.”

Asked by co-host Andy Goldstein if he specifically meant Rangers or Celtic, Bent replied: “Yeah, it did wonders for Steven Gerrard.”

Frank Lampard managerial record

Lampard’s spell with Derby was pretty much par for the course as he marginally missed out on Premier League promotion in his one year at the helm.

That somehow led to him being promoted to one of the top jobs in English football with Chelsea, with whom he spent the vast majority of his playing career.

Lampard had a 52.4-per-cent win rate at Stamford Bridge, where he lasted a year-and-a-half, before a poor spell with Everton in which he won 27 per cent of his matches in charge.

Then came a second, underwhelming, caretaker spell with Chelsea last season and he has not been seen in a dugout since. Thankfully, the Gers board saw past him and instead went with Clement last year.

Lampard will return to management soon, but there is absolutely no way he deserves to even be mentioned as a contender for the Ibrox job once it becomes available again.

In other Rangers news, a Premier League midfielder with “great quality” is now up for grabs this summer amid a recent development with a move to Ibrox on the cards.
