'No-brainer' - Ferguson 'Delighted' by Clement contract decision at Rangers this summer

Rangers icon Barry Ferguson has admitted he is “delighted” Philippe Clement made the “no-brainer” decision to extend Leon Balogun’s contract.

The Nigerian defender was set to leave Ibrox this summer upon the expiry of his deal, but unlike the likes of John Lundstram and Borna Barisic, the 35-year-old put pen to paper on a one-year extension in Glasgow.

While some have been concerned by the prospect of Balogun starting week in and week out again next season, Ferguson has suggested that he will provide some much-needed continuity to Clement’s squad this summer.

Writing for the Daily Record on Friday (7 June) he said: “Keeping big Balogun at the club was a no-brainer for me. Yes, he may be 35 years old but he looks to me like the consummate professional.

“I’m delighted he will be sticking around to offer some continuity as Clement rings the changes elsewhere. With five players released already, the manager will know exactly how he wants his squad to look when he gets back to Auchenhowie.”

Clement wants to overhaul his Rangers squad this summer and while that will meana number of player will depart Glasgow, the Belgian won’t want to lose the entirety of the squad in his first summer at the club.

Balogun doesn’t have to start every week, but his epxerience and knowledge of the game could be invaluable as the Gers prepare to catch Celtic next season, especially because the rest of the group is so young.

On top of that, speculation continues to surround the likes of Connor Goldson and Ben Davies this summer. It would be have been incredibly worrying if the Light Blues had lost all three of their senior centre-backs in the space of a few months

Hopefully, some more transfer news will arrive in Glasgow sooner rather than later to get supporters up and out of their seats. It has all gone a bit quiet at Ibrox, but that doesn’t mean something won’t happen soon.
