'Terrible, Very Poor' - Michael Stewart blasts Rangers ace and St Johnstone man in first half

Michael Stewart hammered both Cyriel Dessers and Sven Sprangler as Rangers missed a decent chance against St Johnstone with the game goalless on Sunday (6 October).

The Nigerian international climbed highest in St Johnstone’s penalty area, getting on the end of James Tavernier’s corner kick, but could only send his header flying over the crossbar.

Dessers is often criticised for his high number of missed chances in a Light Blue jersey, and with Sprangler giving him every opportunity to hit the back of the target, the wasteful striker has been singled out again.

Speaking live via Premier Sports on Sunday (6 October, 8:09pm), Stewart said: “That’s a free header. You can see he gets free. It’s [Sven] Sprangler that’s on him, who loses him.

“It’s terrible defending and Dessers has to do better. That is a guilt-edge opportunity. It’s terrible defending from St Johnstone.

“Sprangler was all over the place – he lost the Rangers striker, and the free header missed the target. Very poor.”

Vaclav Cerny went on to give Rangers the lead with his strike in the 34th minute, giving the Gers a 1-0 half-time advantage.

Cyriel Dessers misses target once again in Rangers v St Johnstone

Despite hitting 22 goals in his first season at Ibrox, fans did not warm to Dessers as many at the club would have hoped. He still decided to fight for his spot despite plenty of transfer links during the summer.

The 29-year-old has started the 2024/25 campaign rather positively, notching seven goals and two assists in all competitions, but there is still a feeling around Ibrox that he misses far too many chances.

His effort over the crossbar after eight minutes against the Saints is the perfect example, though he is likely to bounce back and score. Many top strikers do.

No matter how many goals Dessers scores in a season, it feels he will never escape criticism after a plethora of strikers were linked with a move to Ibrox in recent summers.

For now, Clement continues to believe in his first-choice centre-forward, and that faith continues to be repaid, even if he does miss the occasional chance.

In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd made a Celtic jibe live on Sky Sports after what the Gers did recently.
