'Terrific': Phil Jones says 'aggressive' Tottenham duo were simply brilliant vs Manchester United
"I thought these two were terrific" ????
Tottenham put on their best performance of the season on Sunday with a 3-0 demolition job against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Ange Postecoglou outsmarted Erik Ten Hag to a tee in the red half of Manchester as Tottenham enjoyed a big win on the road against a side who they will be challenging throughout the season for an illustrious top-four spot.
With Micah Richards praising the Spurs manager on his ‘masterstroke’ tactic to play Dejan Kulusevski in central midfield, it was a game to remember for Tottenham, with United now once again in a questionable position under Ten Hag.
And former Red Devil star Phil Jones was impressed by two Tottenham players in particular in the game.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven lauded after ‘terrific’ Tottenham performance
Speaking on Match of the Day 2, the former England international hailed Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for their displays away to United, with the duo impressing greatly and kept the host from causing too many problems.
Jones said: “I thought these two were terrific. They epitomise the qualities that Ange Postecoglou wants from his defenders – front foot, aggressive, winning the ball back, high up the pitch. I thought that the distances were terrific between the pair.”
With Brennan Johnson also showing Van de Ven with praise after the Dutch international’s incredible assist for his Tottenham teammate, the former Bundesliga star and Romero are more than worthy of praise for their display at United.
And for Postecoglou, the Australian manager knows that his centre-back pairing can become one of the best in the Premier League if Romero and Van de Ven can remain fit this season, with the duo in top form after Sunday’s win.
Tottenham have an unbelievable backbone to work from
Romero and Van de Ven is one of the most underrated centre-back partnerships in the Premier League, with the duo offering everything one could ask for in a defensive duo with speed, strength, height and aggression.
And Tottenham are aware that they have an unbelievable backbone to expand from in the years to come, with Romero and Van de Ven nowhere near close enough to hitting their full potential in north London.
With more development and additional players, Tottenham have the foundation to build an incredible squad based around their two star defenders, and Sunday showed what is possible if everyone is on the right wavelength against a top English side.
