Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned fans about “unprecedented levels of spin” as football braces to hear the outcome of Man City’s legal fight with the Premier League.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed there have been no developments in the case with both sides moving their “strategic artillery into position”, in a battle which will also play out in the media.
Man City have pursued legal action against the Premier League regarding the Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules currently in place, with the club claiming the regulations are “unlawful”.
Proceedings started on 10 June and are set to end this week, with City claiming damages from the top-flight as well as the end of APT rules.
If the regulations are scrapped, clubs could agree inflated sponsorship deals with linked companies, increasing the amount they could spend under the Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) rules.
Man City readying for ‘big battle’ as legal battle goes quiet, says Wyness
Wyness has previously told Football Insider (15 June) that Man City could “destroy the fabric” of the Premier League if their legal action is successful.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s very quiet.
“All the strategic artillery is being moved into position and there’s no update at present.
“We’re going to be ready for a big battle when it commences, and that will also play out in the media.
“Both sides are preparing to present themselves, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how this is covered.
“Football fans will be able to see an unprecedented level of spin coming out of this, from all sides.
“There’s never been anything like this before.
“There haven’t been any big developments, just a lot of manoeuvring around the edges.”
