'Obstacles' emerge in Rangers new stadium search as Hampden talks begin - report

Rangers have “considerable obstacles” to overcome before agreeing a deal to play at Hampden Park at the start of the season, according to the Scotsman.

The outlet reported on its website on Wednesday (3 July) that the Light Blues’ preference is to play at the national stadium, but the pitch has been re-seeded following Pink’s concerts in Glasgow on her world tour.

Philippe Clement’s Gers would have to import a new surface for the opening home game against Motherwell using “lay and play technology” which would come at a considerable cost to the club.

The Light Blues aren’t keen on on splitting stadiums despite Murrayfield still being an option at this moment in time and in an ideal world they would be eager to find a local venue to play their home games.

Where will Rangers play amid Ibrox redevelopment updates?

This does just seem like one big mess from Rangers and while it hopefully can be solved quickly in the coming days, there is absolutely no way big decisions like this should be being made on the eve of pre-season.

The opening weeks of the campaign will not only be crucial to the remainder of the season as a whole, but that first handful of games could well be integral to Clement’s tenure in Glasgow as he looks to impress supporters.

We’ve seen managers sacked at Ibrox in recent seasons after poor starts to campaigns. Micheal Beale was on the brink of the sack having missed out on Champions League qualification and it didn’t take long for his P45 to follow.

Philippe Clement needs to start the season well with Rangers

Clement needs the season to start well or he will be under some immediate pressure. That is going to be difficult when he isn’t able to utilise and galvanise the Rangers crowd on European nights.

Hopefully, a solution can be found quickly in the coming days so that fans and the team can begin preparing for the start of the campaign.
