Wolves are likely to sell another star player this summer following the departure of defender Max Kilman to West Ham.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Kilman deal ensures the West Midlands club will get a good start to the 2024-25 financial year, but they are still expected to face profit and sustainability (PSR) issues moving forward.
West Ham signed the 27-year-old in a £40m deal on 6 July after Julen Lopetegui returned to his former club to sign the ex-Wolves captain.
National League side Maidenhead United have received £4million as part of the transfer after including a sell-on clause in the deal that saw Kilman head to Molineux for £40,000 in 2018.
Wolves have faced financial issues over the past year and were believed to be close to breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules last season.
Wolves unlikely to have spending power after Max Kilman exit
While the Kilman deal has added some extra funds to the coffers, Borson expects Gary O’Neil’s side to sell another star player this summer to help balance the books.
“They are a club that runs at quite a big operating loss and they will have some challenges,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I don’t think the Kilman sale means they can go crazy with their spending. I suspect they will probably sell another player as well this summer, so as part of the buying they will also do some selling.
“But it gives them a good start to 2024-25. Let’s say it’s broadly a £35million profit in the PLN, that covers up quite a lot of your day-to-day operating losses when you’ve been in the Premier League now for a number of years.
“I suspect it gives them a good start to the year, but they are not done yet. For some reason, a lot of teams in the Midlands have these sorts of issues.
“But for a team like Wolves, they are constantly under a PSR issue just because of the way their numbers work.
“The top line and the cost base of a lot of these clubs in the middle part of the league are still not really in line with their revenue.
“Until that’s the case, they are going to have to continually sell players to bridge that gap.”
