Chelsea could be set to pay a “very high” transfer fee to sign Genk goalkeeper Mike Penders before the transfer deadline.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the West Londoners’ offer for Penders is “inexplicable” given that it isn’t part of a swap deal.
Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported on 30 July Chelsea are close to agreeing a deal worth more than £17million for the 19-year-old.
It is believed Penders will be immediately loaned back to Genk and spend the rest of the season with the Belgian club if the deal goes through.
The Belgium Under-19 international only made his senior debut on 28 July against Standard Liege, where he kept a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw.
Chelsea could be set to pay over the odds for Mike Penders
While Borson accepts Penders has likely been well-scouted by Chelsea, he admitted the fee in question seems too high for the teenage goalkeeper.
“From the outside, that deal is pretty inexplicable,” Borson told Football Insider.
“But there is no swap deal involved as far as we know.
“A lot of these deals that are inflated tend to have another element to them, which is the swap deal.
“But there doesn’t seem to be one here, so you have to assume on an arm’s length basis Chelsea believe this player is worth that amount of money and you have to believe that was the best deal they could possibly do.
“We are not scouting him, so you have to assume they have found a very high-quality goalkeeper and, therefore, are getting value for money.
“On the face of every element of the deal, it looks very high.
“But I think like most football fans, nobody has seen the guy play.
“I’m sure he has been well-scouted.
“They certainly have high-quality scouting at Chelsea, so I think in the absence of a swap deal, you have to assume that’s what they feel the player is worth.”
