'This Smells' - Keith Wyness: Newcastle's rivals will vote for transfer clampdown

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle United’s rivals are likely to vote to clamp down on the club’s “creative accounting” during the recent summer window.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the transfer of Odysseas Vlachodimos “smells” of being constructed to satisfy Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Vlachodimos was signed by Newcastle from Nottingham Forest for a reported effective fee of £20million after factoring in Elliot Anderson’s £35million switch to the Midlands club.

Both clubs had found themselves in difficulty with PSR rules following big transfer spending in recent years.

14 out of 20 Premier League clubs must vote on any changes to the rulebook in the top flight.

Newcastle deal for Vlachodimos ‘smells’, says Wyness

Wyness claimed there is “no doubt” that inflated PSR deals are currently within the rules in the Premier League.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Newcastle are one of the prime candidates for creative accounting around some of their PSR deals.

“They aren’t the only ones – Villa, Everton and Forest all got involved.

“No doubt, it’s within the rules.

“But I’d expect some potential rule changes at the end of next summer if the clubs decide that’s what they want in the meeting.

“I think that’ll be on the cards.

“The Vlachodimos deal smells of PSR, all the way.

“The rulebook is the rulebook, and if you’re within the rules then you can go ahead and do it.

“It isn’t for the Premier League to take decisions outside of the rulebook.

“The clubs will have to vote to change those rules. It’s a case of 20 shareholders, and they are the only ones who can change the rules – the league can only impose them.”
