Wolves are expected to make their decision on the future of Gary O’Neil soon after his team’s horrific start to the season.
This is according to Mick Brown, who previously worked as a senior scout for the likes of Man United, Aston Villa and West Ham and remains very well connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the former Bournemouth boss is fighting for his job at Molineux.
Wolves are winless in their first even Premier League games and have picked up just one point from a draw against Nottingham Forest in August.
Since then, O’Neil’s side have lost five consecutive games including a 3-2 loss to Brighton in the third round of the Carabao Cup, and sit at the bottom of the league.
They have now shipped 13 goals in their last four games, including five to Brentford last time out, and the board are now weighing up their options.
Football Insider revealed on 28 September that the Wolves hierarchy will back the manager to oversee a change of fortunes after his poor start to the season.
However, there is a feeling at the club something will have to change soon or they could be forced to sack O’Neil and appoint a new manager.
Gary O’Neil faces increasing sack pressure as Wolves decision expected
Wolves are set to face Manchester City at Molineux after the international break before a trip to Brighton, with the fixture list proving difficult.
However, they will then face the likes of Crystal Palace, Southampton, Everton, Ipswich and Leicester in the following eight games, and will see that run as a real chance to pick up some points.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience working closely with managers including as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two, insisted that no manager is safe from the pressure of being sacked, and three more defeats could spell an end to O’Neil’s time at Wolves.
“Anybody who’s down that end of the table is already in trouble,” he told Football Insider.
“But it was only a couple of months ago when everybody was saying what a wonderful job he’s doing and what a good coach he is.
“I look at Wolves and I didn’t expect them to be as bad as they have been. I thought they were better than that.
“There’s going to be teams that are struggling and they’re always under pressure, whoever the manager is, but if they win three games they’ll be in the middle of the table.
“The Premier League is such that if you lose three games in a row, which you can do in the space of a week, you’re under pressure.
“After losing five in a row, I’ve heard the pressure is rising on O’Neil and they’ll be forced to make a decision soon.
“I always say you can’t lose three in a row or you’ll be under real pressure, and that’s what Gary O’Neil is finding out now.“
