Exclusive: Liverpool superstar tells friends big contract update

Virgil van Dijk is keen to remain at Liverpool despite the uncertainty over his contract situation in a huge boost to a potential breakthrough in talks, sources have told Football Insider.

The Dutch superstar, 33, has been subject to ongoing speculation over his future, with less than a year remaining on his current deal at Anfield.

As things stand, he would be allowed to discuss terms over a move abroad from January onwards, but the Reds remain determined to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future.

Football Insider revealed on 6 September that the Dutchman will have the final say over his long-term future, with the club keen to extend his deal.

Now, sources say the club captain has let it be known to friends he is equally keen on the prospect of extending his stay beyond the end of the season, with positive talks expected to take place between all parties.

Following an impressive start to the season under the management of Arne Slot, the captain is said to have been pleased with what he has seen from the new boss.

Following the departure of Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season, question marks had been raised over the future of a number of the club’s key players.

Slot remained a relatively unproven manager at the top level, but has so far shown he has the ability to keep Liverpool challenging at the top level.

Van Dijk remains an important part of those plans to remain at the highest level and is expected to commit his long-term future to the project.

The towering centre-back has established himself as an iconic figure at Anfield since making the move from Southampton in January 2018.

Since the move, he has made 279 appearances for the club, helping them to lift the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup and four domestic trophies.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains very well-connected within the game, previously told Football Insider that he had heard the deal “will happen”.

Now, sources have revealed the defender is keen to remain at Anfield beyond the summer of 2025 and will welcome talks over a new contract.
