Tottenham Expert shares Cristian Romero exit verdict amid £150m transfer claim

John Wenham believes any club interested in Cristian Romero would have to pay close to £150million to sign the Tottenham defender.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose doesn’t think the club should entertain selling the 26-year-old centre-back.

As exclusively revealed by Tottenham News (23 June), PSG are one of several clubs interested in Romero.

However, Wenham – speaking to Tottenham News – believes an eye-watering amount of money will be needed to convince Daniel Levy into a sale.

“You’re looking north of £100million for Romero, somewhere near the £150million mark,” Wenham said.

“Tottenham spent nearly £50million on him, and he has only improved since.

“He’s gone on to become a World Cup winner with Argentina and he always seems to be highly regarded when he plays for his country.

“If we’re looking to improve as a club then we shouldn’t even entertain selling him. He is contracted until 2027, there is therefore no need for us to sell him.”

Will Tottenham be able to keep hold of Cristian Romero?

If Spurs want to keep Romero around long-term, they need to start winning trophies.

The Argentinian is a genuine world-class player who will eventually want to compete for major honours at club level as well as international level.

Therefore, while there is no pressure on Spurs right now, that could quickly change.

This time next year Romero will have just two years left on his contract in North London and might start to reconsider his future if Ange Postecoglou’s side do not progress this coming season.

Cristian Romero is a key player for Tottenham

As his contract runs down, so will his price, and if Spurs aren’t improving Romero is unlikely to sign a new deal.

As a result, the club must ensure they take advantage of having the defender available to them.
