Ange Postecoglou does not believe Joe Rodon is “capable” of playing for Tottenham and would be willing to include him in a deal for Carlos Alcaraz, according to Alan Hutton.

The Welsh international spent the season on loan with Leeds United in the Championship and impressed at Elland Road, but is understood to be one of several players up for sale in North London this summer [Fabrizio Romano, 21 May].

Several clubs have been linked with moves for the 26-year-old but reports have suggested that Spurs are attempting to agree on a potential player-plus-cash swap deal for Alcaraz who is valued at £30million [Alan Nixon, 23 June].

Although Hutton believes Postecoglou’s side still needs further defensive reinforcement this summer, he admits that a deal which would the Argentine midfielder to make the move to London “makes sense” for Spurs.

“As well as Rodon did last season, they must not think that he is capable of taking one of those centre-back places,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“I know we’re talking about reinforcements, but there are deals out there to be done as we’ve seen with Aston Villa, Chelsea and Everton where they’re looking to make deals.

“If you can get somebody out and then bring somebody else back in, in a position that you feel you need to strengthen like Alcaraz, then that makes sense for a lot of people.

“I think we’re going to see a lot of this kind of player trading moving forward because of the situation that a lot of clubs are in.”

Will Joe Rodon exit Tottenham amid Southampton summer transfer speculation?

As Hutton suggested, this sort of player trading seems like it could become incredibly commonplace in the Premier League while the current profit and sustainability rules remain in place at least.

Spurs don’t have any imminent concerns when it comes to the financial side of the game because of the way that Daniel Levy has run the club in the past, but the Tottenham chief isn’t one to normally pass up a deal.

If Rodon is surplus to requirements under Postecoglou currently, it only makes sense for the Lilywhites to move him on and if that can be done in a way to help secure Alcaraz as well, Spurs can’t miss that opportunity.

The deal makes sense for all parties involved as Hutton implied. The only question will now be whether or not the two sides can reach an agreement on valuations before somebody else comes knocking for Rodon this summer.
