Tottenham in Tyrick Mitchell transfer twist as Barcelona developments emerge

Tottenham will face stiff competition from Barcelona to sign Crystal Palace full-back Tyrick Mitchell, Sport reports.

According to the Spanish news outlet’s website [24 December], Deco has identified a new left-back as a priority and is preparing a move for Mitchell, who will be free to negotiate a Bosman transfer in January.

Ange Postecoglou is eager to strengthen his backline in the upcoming transfer window, and while Destiny Udogie will be ready to feature against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, concerns have emerged in North London regarding his extensive workload.

Tyrick Mitchell would be a smart signing for Tottenham

The 25-year-old has been a regular starter in the Premier League, and as he approaches the final months of his Crystal Palace contract, he could be ready to take the next step.

However, with North London rivals Arsenal and Barcelona in the frame for his signature, prying the left-back out of the Eagles will be no easy task.

Furthermore, Barcelona have a distinct advantage – Bosman rules dictate that players, in the final six months of their deals, can negotiate with sides outside of the UK only.

Therefore, Tottenham cannot afford to wait until the end of the campaign to negotiate with Mitchell and must submit an offer that is too good for Crystal Palace to refuse.

In an ideal world, Postecoglou will offer Ben Chilwell a lifeline out of Chelsea after Enzo Maresca deemed the Champions League winner surplus to requirements and take his services for the season before bringing Mitchell to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next year.

Nevertheless, Barcelona’s interest certainly throws a spanner in the works for Postecoglou, and now the Spurs boss must decide how desperately he wants to bring the left-back to North London.
