Dejan Kulusevski was the star of the show as Tottenham beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (30 October).
It was a fairly end-to-end tie throughout but, in the end, it felt like the better team won even if Ange Postecoglou’s men did find themselves on the backfoot more than once.
Sweden international Kulusevksi set up both of Spurs’ goals, the first being an inch-perfect pass across the box towards Timo Werner who coolly placed the ball into the back of the net.
Pape Matar Sarr’s, however, took many by surprise as the Swede sent a ball to the midfielder on the edge of the box from a corner which the Senegalese international then struck beautifully.
City did manage to claw one back in the dying embers of the first half but in the end, the two goals Spurs scored was enough for them to see the game out.
Here, Tottenham Hotspur News has rated each player out of 10.
Guglielmo Vicario – 6
First Carabao Cup appearance of the season and was once again solid between the sticks, didn’t have all that much to do throughout the clash, he couldn’t have stopped City’s goal and seemed unfazed by their numerous shots in the final minutes of the game.
Archie Gray – 5
The 18-year-old was decent down the right-hand side but managed to lose the battle against Matheus Nunes on more than one occasion, overall not the best performance from the youngster.
Christian Romero – 7 (Off for Ben Davies 51′)
Held down the fort alongside his centre-back partner and kept City at bay. Took James McAtee to the ground which resulted in City’s second-best chance of the first half with a free-kick.
Radu Dragusin – 8
Dealt with everything that came his way and covered plenty of ground to try and keep City at bay. Was arguably Totteham’s best defender and proved his worth once again.
Micky van de Ven – N/A (Off for Udogie 12′)
Pape Matar Sarr – 8 (Off for Yves Bissouma 45′)
Helped Tottenham keep control of the midfield but was clumsy on occasion. He did, however, score an absolute peach of a strike from outside of the box to send Tottenham 2-0 up after another perfect pass from Kulusevski.
Rodrigo Bentancur – 7
Decent performance all around, made some solid tackles to break up the Cityzens’ attacks and made many final third passes to help his team.

Dejan Kulusevski – 9
More than made up for his poor outing against Crystal Palace, played an inch-perfect across-the-box pass to set Werner up for Tottenham’s opening goal. Spurs’ best player on the day, also helped set up Sarr for Spurs’ second with another stellar pass.
Brennan Johnson – 6 (Off for Moore 68′)
Didn’t have all that much to do in the game, overshadowed by the performance of Werner on the night but did start the move for Tottenham’s goal. Left Nunes alone at the back post which allowed City to bag their only goal.
Dominic Solanke – 6
Some really nice pressing and hold-up play throughout the clash didn’t have much of a say in the goals but kept the pressure on City’s defence and made himself a nuisance.
Timo Werner – 8 (Off for Richarlison 68′)
Scored Spurs’ first of the night, coolly placed his shot into the bottom right corner and justified Postecoglou’s decision to start him over Mikey Moore. Solid performance overall but returned to his old ways as the game went on. Was forced off the pitch in the 68th minute after what seemed like a groin issue.
Substitutions
Destiny Udogie – 6 (On for Van de Ven 12′)
Slotted straight into his regular role of left-back, tried to keep Savinho at bay but was done by the Brazilian in the lead-up to Nunes’ goal.
Yves Bissouma – 7 (On for Sarr 45′)
Took over strongly from Sarr, didn’t put a foot wrong and helped ensure Tottenham’s midfield stayed strong. Made a stellar goal-line clearance in the last few minutes to keep Tottenham’s lead.
Ben Davies – 6 (On for Romero 51′)
Didn’t have all that much to do, worked well with Dragusin and gave Romero a well-earned rest, albeit a short one.
Mikey Moore – 6 (On for Johnson 68′)
Likely came on to give Johnson a break, would’ve been hoping to better his performance from Spurs’ last time out but in the end, he barely contributed.
Richarlison – 6 (On for Werner 68′)
Came on and made little difference, had a good chance in the 83rd minute but nothing came of it.
In other Tottenham news, John Wenham shared his verdict on the likely increase in price of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.
