Liverpool put on arguably the most impressive performance of the Arne Slot era so far on Tuesday as they dispatched Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
Liverpool beat the reigning German champions 4-0, and this was a remarkable showing from a number of the Reds’ star players.
Luis Diaz’s hat trick will receive most of the headlines, but perhaps the most incredible moment of the evening was Curtis Jones’ assist for the opening goal.
Indeed, Jones played an incredible pass for Diaz before he scored his first goal, and speaking on the Official Liverpool Podcast, Phil Thompson went as far as to compare Jones’ pass to Cole Palmer’s assist against Newcastle last week.
Curtis Jones compared to Cole Palmer
Thompson spoke incredibly highly of Jones’ assist, comparing the young midfielder to Palmer.
Jones deserves the world of credit for this assist, and Thompson was happy to shower the midfielder with praise.
“I’m going to start our talk about this game in the second half with a moment. Curtis Jones pass set up Luis Diaz for the opening goal. What a moment, Tommo,” The host said.
“What a moment, like we said about Cole Palmer’s a couple of games ago didn’t we?, seeing who was it against Newcastle? And this is one of those moments, it took something like that. I think it was great, wasn’t it, the second half,” Thompson said.
“We do have a problem, probably come back to it, of what is happening in our first halves. But the second half was just electric. We had the fireworks before, and we had the fireworks in the second half, because it was completely different.”
“And if you watch and you look at the stats, the stats just all build up in the second half. And it was, it was truly fantastic. But that was one moment which changed the course of the game.”
What Curtis Jones has said about Cole Palmer
It’s interesting that Jones has been compared to Palmer here, because just last week Jones was praising Palmer.
Indeed, speaking to Sky Sports, Jones named Palmer as one of the best players he’s played with at international youth level.
Jones also named Anthony Gordon as a top talent.
During his praise for Palmer, Jones said that Liverpool’s players are always asking him about the Chelsea star.
“I’m always asked about Cole a lot,” said the Reds midfielder.
“The lads always ask me about Cole, in training the lads always ask me about Cole.”
Arne Slot recently praised Jones for the job he did on Palmer when Liverpool beat Chelsea last month too.
Jones and Palmer are two of England’s most talented young players, and who knows? Perhaps they could be key players for the Three Lions in years to come.
