Ross McCormack was blown away by Rangers captain James Tavernier’s free kick against Dundee on 21 December.

The Gers right-back nearly found the back of the net on Saturday at Ibrox but was denied by the crossbar with Trevor Carlson beaten in the Dundee goal.

However, the hosts did manage to pick up the three points with Vaclav Cerny’s goal early in the second half which was the only goal of the game.

Speaking on Open Goal on 23 December, McCormack, a BBC pundit, said at 58:05: “They look so much better at the minute, for sure. Tavernier coming back into a bit of form as well. Nearly scored an unbelievable free kick at the weekend.”

Rangers have to find a long-term James Tavernier replacement

While Gers will undoubtedly hope that Tavernier maintains his current form until the end of the season, it’s crucial for the club to start planning for a long-term replacement.

Now 33, the Englishman has been a stalwart for Rangers, but his performances this season have not all been great and he has struggled against tough opposition.

Although he has shown moments of brilliance, the reality is that his age and the physical demands of the position suggest that relying on him as the first-choice right-back could become increasingly risky.

The club need to look towards the future, ensuring they have a player who can eventually take over his role seamlessly.

This approach not only safeguards the team’s performance level but also respects the Englishman’s legacy by allowing him to transition into a more mentoring or rotational role, should he remain with the club beyond this season.

Fans will also appreciate him a lot more if he decides to step aside and admit that the club need someone better there.
