Everton should not face further punishments after borrowing money to complete the construction of the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, Kieran Maguire has said.
The Toffees owe £200million to A-Cap, an American private investment company, following a failed takeover attempt by 777 Partners, though it is understood a deal has been reached for the debt [Kieran Maguire].
Having already been deducted a total of eight points by the Premier League last season due to PSR breaches, Maguire is adamant that the club not face further charges after trying to finish the building of their new stadium.
Speaking via The Price of Football podcast on Tuesday (29 October), Maguire said: “It is a very valid point. The interest issue has been excluded from the calculations that have gone into Everton’s points deductions. However, there is a separate potential set of charges going against Everton, which relates specifically to the interest on the loans. Here, I am unequivocal.
“Everton have not been given any sporting advantage in terms of their ability to sign players, player wages and generate points on the pitch through a pretty moot point that the club borrowed money from the owner, that money has gone into the construction of the new stadium, as has the interest, and the Premier League has said, ‘We’ve looked at the loan and it doesn’t actually say that,’ so therefore, they think the interest should be charged.
“Everton have gained no sporting advantage. I’m all for punishing clubs if they breach rules, and whether the rules should be there in the first place is a separate issue, if there’s a sporting benefit then there should be a sporting sanction. Here, there is nothing gained by Everton.”
Premier League to punish Everton once again?
The Toffees finally look to be entering a positive space, on and off the pitch, but a new charge from the Premier League could throw a spanner in the works.
Fans at Goodison Park are already unhappy with the Premier League, whether that be because of on-field decisions from referees or the behind-the-scenes drama that is seeing the club punished.
Of course, with Dan Friedkin hoping to complete his takeover by December, an influx of cash should be coming to Goodison Park, but that will not be enough to hide from the current potential charges.
Moving stadiums is an extremely arduous task, and an expensive one at that, but the long-term benefits could be crucial for the club’s longevity, especially when it comes to matchday income and the surrounding areas.
The club are clearly taking action to address the current financial issues, which are being pushed along by The Friedkins, so fans would just see it as a heartless act by the Premier League to punish them further.
