Alfie Dorrington could be the latest beneficiary for Tottenham after the club engaged in “constructive” talks with Belgian side Westerlo.

The performances of Luka Vuskovic and Alfie Devine at the Pro League outfit have been so impressive, that both sides have met to discuss the possibility of further opportunities.

Westerlo confirmed the talks via X [7 November], with the club believing this to be the first step of what could see the side essentially become an affiliate club for Tottenham.

Dorrington has been ticking along with the Under-21s side this term but with the level of competition for a starting berth in central defence, a loan move to play top-flight football in Europe could be the perfect move to fast-track his development.

Aflie Dorrington would benefit from a loan away from Tottenham

The 19-year-old is entering the most pivotal years of his football development and is facing the prospect of being cast out from the set-up in North London if he does not live up to the promise shown in his early years.

It is somewhat surprising a youth player of his standing has never been sent out to gain first-team experience.

However, the decision is entirely up to Tottenham and, as the club is starting to become concerned at his lack of progression perhaps it is partly down to their handling of his career.

While Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear enjoy their involvement with the first team this year and Vuskovic continues to make a huge impression in Belgium, Dorrington is left behind the new wave of promising academy prospects.

The defender should use the new-found strong relations with Westerlo to facilitate his first loan move away from North London and link up again with Under-21s teammate Devine.

Tottenham

He has already achieved everything he can with the Under-21s side, as he approaches his 20s, first-team football regardless of the level has to be the utmost priority.

Ange Postecoglou could have a serious contender on his hands to challenge Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven but he is not being exposed to the conditions he needs to be moulded into a potential Premier League centre-back.

Dorrington faces the most important months of this Tottenham career he cannot afford to waste his most valuable years in the academy. Whether that is a permanent or temporary exit from Enfield will be his to decide.
