Tottenham could be concerned with Cristian Romero after the defender was involved in a frustrating 2-1 loss for Argentina against Colombia.

Romero picked up a 98th-minute yellow card for dissent right at the end of the Albiceleste’s first loss in 13 matches, as James Rodriguez’s penalty on the hour mark proved to be the winner in Barranquilla.

Argentina were sluggish throughout and Romero saw his fellow defenders Gonzalo Montiel and Lisandro Martinez taken off in a bid to chase the game, as he returns to North London on the back of a defeat.

Postecoglou’s side face Arsenal in their first Premier League match after the international break, and amid the hostility of a North London Derby, the Spurs boss cannot allow Romero to be a dissenting voice.

Tottenham ace Cristian Romero has mixed night for Argentina

After excelling to help Argentina keep a clean sheet in their 3-0 win over Chile on 5 September, Romero and the Albiceleste rearguard had no such easy ride as Colombia scored midway through both halves.

Romero had plenty to do at the back against a front-foot Colombia side, putting in four tackles and four interceptions apiece, and wasn’t being dribbled past by a single opponent.

Although Romero won all five of the ground duels he contested, he won just one of three in the air (33 per cent), going up against Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran up front for Colombia [SofaScore].

Furthermore, the Spurs centre-back had 41 touches and completed 90 per cent of his 31 attempted passes, but didn’t even try a long ball forward for his team-mates to latch onto.

Romero wasn’t always calm in possession though, seeing the ball taken from him on three occasions, and although he didn’t commit a single foul, the 26-year-old was still booked late on for dissent.

A frustrating night all round for Argentina and Romero cannot overlap into Spurs’ preparations for the North London Derby – because if there’s any opponent who’ll try to get under his skin, it’ll be Arsenal.

In other Tottenham news, one Spurs star prepared for the North London Derby with a man-of-the-match performance on international duty.
