Timo Werner must accept his role as a squad player at Tottenham after showing a lack of confidence against AZ Alkmaar.
Spurs secured their third win in three games in the Europa League on Thursday (24 October) thanks to a Richarlison goal against the Eredivisie outfit.
Werner started on the wing before being hooked at half-time after a difficult night in North London.
The 28-year-old’s spell with the club was summed up in one move as Allen discussed his lack of confidence while commentating on TNT Sports [25 October].
He said: “It’s a fabulous run from Werner, who stays onside. Now he just composes himself, but there’s no confidence or conviction to strike with any venom.”
Timo Werner must accept Tottenham role
It feels as if Ange Postecoglou has found a role for the ex-Chelsea man at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when it comes to a Premier League and Europa League balance.
After coming in against the Dutch side from the start, Werner registered 34 touches, with two in the opposition box, and 14 passes with a 70 per cent accuracy [FotMob].
Of the 16 players who featured for Tottenham against AZ, only Brennan Johnson and Richarlison (both 50 per cent) registered a lower accuracy [WhoScored].
The forward did register two shots but had just one on target as he had an expected goal tally of 0.21 in his 45 minutes on the pitch.
As for his dribbling, he attempted one and failed to complete it [Sofascore], rather summing up his night out wide.
There is plenty of output from the German which benefits Tottenham and could prove to be better suited to European football rather than domestic.
On average, over the last year, the former RB Leipzig ace received 14.09 progressive passes and completed 7.83 progressive carries per 90 [Fbref].
This allows him to stretch the opposition and that can prove useful for Spurs in Europe as he takes advantage of tired midweek defences.
Werner is just let down by his 0.14 non-penalty goals and 3.42 shot-creating actions per 90, which would make him a risk if starting in the Premier League.
The 28-year-old will get more chances, as a general rule, in continental football compared to league which makes him better suited.
Postecoglou could now make the decision to start him exclusively in the Europa League moving forward and use him solely from the bench in the Premier League.
In other Tottenham news, interest in teenage sensation has continued as a behind-the-scenes update has emerged at Real Madrid.
