Ashley Williams made note of Radu Dragusin’s “excellent” performance for Tottenham in the 4-0 win against Manchester City.
The 22-year-old was selected to start at the Etihad on Saturday [23 November] alongside makeshift centre-back partner Ben Davies as the pair kept a clean sheet on the road in a statement victory against the reigning Premier League champions.
Former Premier League defender Williams couldn’t help but note the Romanian’s efforts on Match of the Day [23 November, 14:50] as he managed to keep the prolific Erling Haaland quiet.
He said: “Highlighted Dragusin and Davies, who were excellent on the day, not just defending but with the ball as well.”
Radu Dragusin stepped up for Tottenham when he was needed most
Dragusin has struggled to settle into life in North London this year, producing a string of “poor” performances for Tottenham, which followed him onto international duty with Romania.
Furthermore, his future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been questioned, with reports emerging linking the defender with a move to Juventus [La Gazzetta dello Sport].
However, Spurs are adamant that Dragusin is going nowhere in the January transfer window, a stance further strengthened after his display at the Etihad.
Ange Postecoglou was expected to return to the capital empty-handed as he headed into the clash without preferred centre-back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven – the Australian could have a new star on his hands.
Dragusin was a rock at the back – completing 60 per cent of his contested duels, with three blocked shots, two clearances, one interception and one tackle made against Manchester City [Sofascore].
The Romanian admittedly struggled somewhat in moving the ball forward, completing only 25 per cent of his long balls, but was secure in possession, only losing the ball six times and completing 83 per cent of his passes.
Haaland and co had no answer for the centre-back pairing of Dragusin and Davies; the Norweigan lost 62.5 per cent of his duels against the pair.
While all the attention will remain on James Maddison for his “absolutely wonderful” brace in the victory, the defensive efforts were arguably more important in helping Tottenham secure the three points.
Spurs fans may have been anxious about Romero and van de Ven’s absence, but they certainly will not be any more; the defence is in safe hands with Dragusin.
