Gary Neville raved over “absolutely wonderful” James Maddison as his goals helped secure a vital 4-0 win for Tottenham against Manchester City.

Ange Postecoglou raised questions marks with his decision to start Maddison at the Etihad on Saturday [23 November], but the midfielder rounded off his 28th birthday with a first-half brace for Spurs before Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson rounded off the rout.

Neville couldn’t believe what he was seeing from the previously out-of-form midfielder live on Sky Sports [23 November, 5:51pm], as he showed the composure to dink the ball over Ederson in a monumental result for Tottenham.

Neville said: “James Maddison, that is absolutely wonderful.

“The control with the right, the dink with the left is a thing of beauty. That is a brilliant goal.”

Maddison found himself left out in the cold in North London heading into the match at the Etihad, with claims emerging that youngster Mikey Moore could be primed to replace the Englishman in the first team setup.

While he has been touted as unhappy with his current situation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he has responded to his recent woes perfectly on Saturday.

The Spurs talisman scored his brace against Manchester City with two shots on target, resulting in a 100 per cent shot conversion rate [Sofascore].

He ran the show at the Etihad, completing 66 per cent of his long balls, 89 per cent of his passes and 100 per cent of his dribbles.

His defensive work-rate was also evident for all to see, winning 69 per cent of his contested duels and making two clearances.

He also rather impressively made one interception and two tackles to keep Pep Guardiola’s men at bay, which would have delighted Postecoglou.

Maddison was urged “to step up” in North London after falling out of favour for Ange Postecoglou, and he has done so in devastating fashion as he single-handedly delivered another blow to Manchester City’s title hopes and pulled Tottenham out of the early-season rut.
