Ange Postecoglou must drop Timo Werner from his starting line-up after the Tottenham ace struggled to impress against Brighton.
The 28-year-old was largely ineffective as Spurs bottled a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton last Sunday (6 October).
He provided the assist for James Maddison’s goal but failed to make a further impact before being replaced by Pape Matar Sarr in the 79th minute.
Craig Burley was particularly critical of Werner’s performance, labelling the German’s end product as “atrocious”.
Speaking on ESPN FC on Monday (7 October), as reported by TEAMtalk, Burley said: “I don’t want to sort of pick on him, but I am going to.
“Timo Werner whatever he did in Germany, he has been unable to do in two spells in England.
“His end product was once again atrocious, and that adds to the pressure that goes on a team defensively when you are just not finishing teams off.
“It wasn’t just Timo Werner, but if he starts the next game after the international break, I will be very surprised.
“A young 17-year-old in [Mikey] Moore is probably going to come in his place.”
Craig Burley not wrong in his assessment of Tottenham ace Timo Werner
On the surface, Werner’s performance against Brighton was by no means terrible as he registered his first goal contribution of the season.
According to Sofascore, he completed three of four dribbles attempted and won three of his four ground duels.
Nevertheless, Burley is still not wrong in his assessment of the pacy forward, whose end product remains a concern for Postecoglou.
Just like his outing against Ferencvaros in the Europa League on 3 October, he had a shot accuracy of zero per cent as both his attempts failed to hit the target.
Werner’s struggles in the final third were also highlighted in Tottenham’s 3-0 league win against Manchester United on 29 September when he missed two big chances.
Against Brighton, he also lost possession 13 times, with only Dejan Kulusevksi and Pedro Porro faring worse among teammates.
He was fortunate to get three consecutive starts after Son Heung-min sustained an injury, but has failed to take his chance.
Postecoglou now has no option but to drop Werner to the bench, with Son nearing a return and Moore knocking on his door.
In other Tottenham news, Paul Robinson has lauded Brennan Johnson for his recent run of form.
