Brennan Johnson has experienced a mixed time in North London since making the switch to Tottenham last summer.
The Welshman has scored just five goals in the Premier League for Ange Postecoglou’s side, though he did manage to pick up 10 assists last season.
However, with playmakers James Maddison, Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski in the squad, Spurs are crying out for goalscorers to help Dominic Solanke in the final third.
Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast on Monday (16 September), Chris Sutton said: “I do think Tottenham have issues. They lack quality in the wide areas.
“Brennan Johnson, I think, has been a massive disappointment since going to Tottenham. I don’t know what his goals and assists are but I don’t think he’s creative enough in those wide areas. He hasn’t found his shooting boots.”
Brennan Johnson fails to impress at Tottenham
After back-to-back defeats to Newcastle United and Arsenal, Postecoglou will be desperate for more of his players to simply hit the back of the net, with Johnson yet to open his account for the season.
With just 43 per cent of his shots on target so far, the winger has only recorded an xG of 0.79 in the Premier League and an xA of 0.24, as per FotMob. Postecoglou will need to consider dropping him after the North London Derby.
Against the Gunners on Sunday 15 September, Johnson was hooked after 68 minutes, having only hit the target with 50 per cent of his efforts (1/2), completing just 50 per cent of his dribbles and winning just 33 per cent of his ground duels [FotMob].
There is no doubt the 23-year-old is a talented player, becoming a regular at international level with Wales, but his bottom 43 percentile ranking for non-penalty goals and bottom 54 percentile for assists is just not good enough [FBref].
Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert are more than capable of occupying his position on the pitch, so Postecoglou has a decision to make on the winger ahead of Spurs’ clash against Coventry on Wednesday 18 September.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs could sign a new defender as a January transfer is mooted.
