Ange Postecoglou would have been delighted for Pedro Porro as the Tottenham right-back continues to shine for Spain.
Porro has been one of Spurs’ more consistent performers over the past couple of months.
The defender has played every minute in the Premier League this season so far for Postecoglou’s side, scoring once. As a result of his bright form, it appears as though he is finally getting an opportunity to make a name for himself with the Spanish national team.
Porro has always struggled on the international stage. He has played just five times for his country, missing out on Spain’s 2024 UEFA European Championship success after being left out of the final squad.
However, it appears as though things might be changing after the 25-year-old started both of Spain’s UEFA Nations League matches during the October international break.
And things couldn’t have gone much better.
After impressing in the 1-0 win over Denmark at the Estadio Nueva Condomina (12 October), Porro once again shone on Tuesday (15 October), helping Spain record back-to-back clean sheets with a 3-0 victory over Serbia at the Estadio Municipal Nuevo El Arcángel.
Tottenham right-back Pedro Porro shines for Spain
If Porro is starting consistently for the European champions, that can only be a good thing for his confidence.
And based on his performance against Serbia, it is clear that he deserves that spot.
He got things underway in style, providing an assist for Aymeric Laporte, who nodded in the Spurs man’s cross to open the scoring after just five minutes.
In addition, as per Sofascore, Porro was more or less flawless defensively, making three tackles, two interceptions and one clearance. He also won six of his eight ground duels as well as three fouls for his team.
However, just as is so often the case for Tottenham, it was the right-back’s work going forward which really helped him to stand out. Porro completed 85 per cent of his passes, with an impressive six of those key.
He also played four accurate crosses into the box and managed three shots at goal himself.
With speculation swirling around his long-term future (via Fabrizio Romano, 9 October), Postecoglou will no doubt be desperate to keep hold of Porro.
However, for now, at least, Porro is a Tottenham player, and if he brings his Spain form back to North London, it can only be good news for everybody connected with Spurs.
In other Tottenham news, John Wenham has shared a problem one “talented” player on loan from the club is facing.
