Ange Postecoglou will not want to take any risks over his in-form Tottenham star Brennan Johnson after being substituted at half-time on Friday (11 October).

The 23-year-old continued his club form into the international break, opening the scoring during Wales’ 2-2 draw against Iceland before raising eyebrows after being substituted at half-time.

While Craig Bellamy claimed he was taken off at the break as a “precaution” [Dafydd Pritchard], the Spurs manager will not be so calm over the situation.

The Australian has already been without Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert through their respective injuries, and he will be eager not to add Johnson to that list.

He now has seven goals in his last seven appearances for club and country, having already matched Harry Kane’s record from 2019, and will only want to extend that run further against West Ham on Saturday 19 October.

In the first 45 minutes for Wales, Johnson scored with a 100 per cent shot accuracy, maintained an 81 per cent passing accuracy, created two chances and accurately delivered 100 per cent of his crosses [FotMob].

It should really come as no surprise to see him firing on all cylinders, considering his performances so far this season, and his suspension for Wales’ next game will have only been good news for Spurs.

However, Postecoglou now has a new fear to keep in mind until the winger returns to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium once the international break finishes.

The 23-year-old ranks in the top 80 percentile for non-penalty goals, the top 88 percentile for assists, the top 92 percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area, and even the top 92 percentile for blocks [FBref].

He has become an incredibly crucial member of the team for Postecoglou, and with Spurs needing to get back on track following a shock 3-2 loss to Brighton, they cannot afford to lose the Welshman to injury.
