Ange Postecoglou could make two changes when Tottenham take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday (1 September).
Postecoglou’s side picked up their first three points of the season by smashing Everton 4-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (24 August).
After a result like that, most managers would be tempted not to make any changes. However, next up is a trip to St James’ Park to take on the Magpies.
That has not been a happy hunting ground for Spurs in recent years, with the North London outfit losing 6-1 and 4-0 on their last two visits to St James’ Park.
Therefore, despite their positive result last time out, Postecoglou could still make some changes which reflect the more difficult nature of this clash.
Ange Postecoglou to make two Tottenham changes against Newcastle United
Guglielmo Vicario will likely start between the sticks. The Italy international completed 100 per cent of his passes against the Toffees and had just one save to make against the Toffees (Sofascore).
Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero made quite the impression against Everton, with the former grabbing an assist while the latter got himself on the scoresheet. Postecoglou is likely to start the same centre-back pairing against the Magpies.
Pedro Porro made three tackles and played one key pass against Sean Dyche’s side, while Destiny Udogie completed 93 per cent of his passes, with the flying full-back duo likely to keep their places.
Yves Bissouma returned to action for Spurs after his recent troubles with a bang, grabbing his first goal for the club while completing 93 per cent of his passes. He will be expecting to keep his place in the team.
James Maddison is also likely to start after grabbing an assist and playing two key passes against Everton, while Pape Matar Sarr could be introduced to provide some more stability in midfield.
Ange Postecoglou to axe Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson?
Brennan Johnson should be the one to make way for Sarr after his disappointing display against Everton, in which the Welshman completed just 79 per cent of his passes, missed one big chance and was inaccurate with zero per cent of his crosses into the box.
Sarr’s introduction in midfield would allow Dejan Kulusevski to move further forward and play on the right, with Son Heung-min likely to be shifted out to the left, meaning Wilson Odobert would be dropped to the bench.
Odobert enjoyed a positive Spurs debut, completing 86 per cent of his passes with one of those key. However, in a game of this magnitude, Postecoglou might opt to avoid throwing the 19-year-old in at the deep end.
Instead, Richarlison could be introduced up top, as doubts over Dominic Solanke’s fitness remain. The Brazillian was handed minutes off the bench against his former club as he looks to step up his return from injury.
In other Tottenham news, Bryan King has urged the club to cancel the contract of one player who isn’t in Postecoglou’s plans.
