Ange Postecoglou will be sweating on the fitness of Tottenham defender Cristian Romero after he was removed at half-time for Argentina on Thursday.
The 26-year-old was “barely” able to be called up to the national side [One Football, 15 November] but was selected to start the 2-1 loss against Paraguay at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium [14 November] and is now a doubt to feature against Peru.
Argentinian news outlet Ole [14 November] awarded Romero a low 4/10 rating for his first-half performance, writing: “No reaction to mark Sanabria (for the goal). He closed Almiron well in a couple of spicy bullfights. He left in the middle of the game as a physical precaution.”
Posteocglou made the decision to select the centre-back to start the 2-1 loss against Ipswich Town despite nursing an injury concern heading into the clash, now both he and Lionel Scaloni will face a nervous wait on his condition.
Cristian Romero pays the price for Tottenham and Argentina mismanagement
Romero is well within his rights to feel left in the lurch by his club and national sides as he is left to pay the price for their mismanagement.
Spurs were forced to rush the defender back into action against Ipswich after Micky van de Ven suffered yet another hamstring injury, his replacement Radu Dragusin was torn apart for a “horrendous” error in the 3-2 loss against Galatasaray.
His replacement on Thursday evening Leonardo Balerdi on the other hand, should have started against Paraguay – Argentina lead the South America World Cup qualifying standings and are no worse off after the result
Regardless, Romero was on track for a stellar performance for the national side, completing 95 per cent of his passes, winning his sole aerial duel, blocked one shot and, made one clearance throughout his 45 minutes on the pitch [Sofascore].
Whether or not Romero would have prevented the loss had he remained in action for the full 90 minutes is up for debate, but clearly his impact for club and country outweighs the need to manage his existing injury concerns.
He did battle through for a dominant performance against Ipswich despite the result, winning 77 per cent of his duels and completing 87 per cent of his passes with one key pass.
However, Postecoglou and Scaloni will yield the blame should Romero face an extended period on the sidelines because of his extensive involvement and, with Manchester City up next in the Premier League, the Australian could be tempted to repeat his errors if the injury is deemed a minor concern.
