Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s contract situation at Everton must be resolved before the end of the summer transfer window on 30 August.
After the Toffees closed out their pre-season preparations with a 1-1 draw against Roma – in which Calvert-Lewin netted the equaliser, Sean Dyche was asked for an update on the striker.
Calvert-Lewin is into the last 12 months of his deal and has been linked with a move elsewhere, and Dyche didn’t inspire much confidence with his assessment of the club’s policy on resolving the transfer questions surrounding his number nine [Liverpool Echo, 7 August].
In quotes reported by Liverpool World (11 August), Dyche said: “There’s no current need for anything or nothing urgent, that’s for sure.
“Eventually, if the price is right, one knows the situation of the club in the bigger picture – so the price is right for any player.”
Everton have to stick or twist on Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer
Calvert-Lewin going into the new season as the Blues’ first-choice striker is hardly a new phenomenon, but never before have the question marks over his future been so big at Goodison Park.
The 27-year-old running his contract down to the bone is far from a wise decision on either his or the club’s part and could result in him leaving on the cheap at a very late stage in the transfer window.
Earlier this summer, Calvert-Lewin had looked likely to be one of the first players to exit as the June 30 PSR deadline approached, but a proposed swap deal with Newcastle United fell flat at the last hurdle [The Telegraph, 4 July].
Despite surviving the scare of losing their star striker, the Toffees are yet to agree new terms with their number nine [TEAMtalk, 8 August], with Dyche’s comments suggesting that in the club’s eyes, there is no rush.
Either the Blues are hugely confident that Calvert-Lewin will sign a new deal in time, or they are prepared to turn down any bid which could come in for him as the transfer deadline edges closer.
The financial situation at Goodison Park remains precarious after Dan Friedkin – the owner of Roma –pulled out of takeover talks last month, potentially leaving them with no choice but to accept a late bid.
A deadline day scenario where the Toffees lose Calvert-Lewin for a cut-price fee, with no time to bring in a replacement, could be catastrophic to their Premier League campaign – and thus signing the striker up to a new contract is of paramount importance.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are at risk of being hit with another Premier League points deduction after new allegations were made.
