Ange Postecoglou has handed Tottenham youngster Junai Byfield a surprising opportunity during the early stages of Spurs’ pre-season.

While several of the biggest stars in the Australian’s squad have now returned to North London as preparations begin for the new season, there are several young talents hoping to make a mark on the manager.

Players like Mikey Moore, Frankie Day and Will Lankshear have been attracting attention in the lead-up to the new campaign with pundits and supporters alike hoping to see them break into the Lilywhites’ first team.

However, a new face has reportedly joined the likes of Son Heung-min and James Maddison in training as Postecoglou takes a look at another young talent who could step into the fold in the coming years.

According to Lilywhite Rose via Instagram (12 July) u16 defender Byfield is training with Spurs’ first team on Friday as preparations continue ahead of the new Premier League campaign in North London.

Will Ange Postecoglou hand Junai Byfield a new role at Tottenham this summer?

While most supporters won’t know loads about the teenager Spurs expert John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News (19 May) that the young defender was “an outstanding talent who will continue to play above his age level next season.”

While it would be a surprise if Byfield were to break into Tottenham’s first team over the course of next season, it is a testament to his ability that he is already training with the first team at only 16 years old.

Spurs aren’t blessed with loads of depth in the heart of defence and with the likes of Radu Dragusin, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero featuring in the Euros and Copa America respectively, young players were always going to have to step in the fold.

First-team football may still be a way away for Byfield, but the clear pathway available to young players at Tottenham is what allows Spurs to pick up and keep hold of some incredibly exciting talents.

Hopefully, the 16-year-old defender will have left a lasting impression on Postecoglou and his coaching staff and it won’t take long for him to feature in the future.
