Rangers fans should be happy to have witnessed the collapse of Tottenham Hotspur against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Thursday.
Ange Postecoglou – a figure never in the popular books of those at Ibrox – faced the wrath of furious Spurs fans after his team’s poor defeat in Dorset, as the Europa League contest between the two north of the border next Thursday [12 December] edges closer.
The Australian returns to Glasgow for the first time since swapping Celtic for Spurs, and has already acknowledged the hostile reception he will endure from a partisan Govan crowd.
Rangers are facing Spurs at the right time. Granted, Gers have an important league meeting with Ross County to navigate, while Postecoglou battles Chelsea.
However, following a steady form improvement from Philippe Clement’s side while Tottenham are shrouded in inconsistency and anger from the support, Thursday could well be the catalyst for a much stronger spell of the campaign at Ibrox.
Rangers have chance to turn the screw on Postecoglou
Rangers in Europe are a different kind of beast – to the point it’s frustrating when the team can show their mettle in all corners of the continent only to pass up victory against easily beatable domestic opponents.
Tottenham are a brazen, risk-taking, ridiculously unpredictable side in England who should on paper – and by admission of many Gers fans – be heading to Ibrox and getting the job done.
But that is far from the case. The return of Postecoglou will make the league phase showdown more cinematic, but the gradually improving confidence throughout the team will surely make for an intriguing battle.
This has been helped by the fact that this week’s AGM with 1,500 shareholders in attendance, led by John Gilligan [5 December], went down far more smoothly than many warned. It certainly didn’t descend into farce, anyway. And that is a weight off Clement, Nils Koppen and the board that cannot be underestimated.
The importance of a good result against both Ross County and Tottenham then becomes paramount for the first Old Firm cup final in 22 years, as Celtic stand between Gers and retaining the Scottish League Cup at Hampden.
A positive outcome would be a massive boost heading into January, and when a pattern of positivity emerges, the recruitment can in turn be far better than it has been. There is still plenty to play for in this campaign at Ibrox yet.
And after what happened to Postecoglou and Tottenham, Gers fans will have even more hope in the Europa League clash.
In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson accuses the club of “degrading” one of their stars.
