View: Tottenham fans will be fuming with Daniel Levy as Spurs legend slams the club

Daniel Levy has once again demonstrated his greed after Paul Gascoigne hit out at Tottenham.

Spurs’ no-nonsense chairman isn’t usually the most popular man in North London, a fact which doesn’t seem to really bother him based on recent comments (via PaulHitsheet on X, 23 September).

Despite his lack of popularity, it is hard to deny his brilliance off the field, as he continues to turn the club into a commercial powerhouse.

However, a football club’s drive to generate wealth is no excuse to exploit and somewhat turn their back on a club legend, which it appears is something Levy and Spurs are guilty of doing.

During a recent interview via SportsCasting (13 October), Gascoigne explained why he will be supporting Rangers when they host Tottenham at Ibrox in the UEFA Europa League (12 December).

The Tottenham legend explained, “At Rangers, I’m welcomed in every way and at Tottenham, I asked for a couple of tickets and they said, ‘That’ll be 400 pounds each.’ I was like, wow, with all I did for that club, you know?

“When I left Tottenham I got them a lot of money when I signed for Lazio and I put in my contract when I went to Lazio that Tottenham had the first option to sign me back and they didn’t so I was a bit upset at that, considering the teams I could’ve went to.

“I made the right choice in going to Rangers, the fans were fantastic, they love me up there. I didn’t like doing venues up there because I speak for an hour and they start singing for 55 minutes.

“When they play Spurs, I think I’ll be a Rangers fan.”

Daniel Levy has questions to answer after treatment of Tottenham legend Paul Gascoigne

A football club’s treatment of its legends is reflective of the club’s values. Therefore, based on what Gasocigne has said, it is clear that all Tottenham value is generating cash.

While Levy wasn’t mentioned by name, that is irrelevant. He is the chairman of the football club.

As a result, he will no doubt be involved in decisions such as the one Gascoigne has described. Therefore, fans have every right to be angry with the 62-year-old.

Gascoigne is an all-time Tottenham great, with the legendary midfielder having done plenty for the club.

While nobody is suggesting he should get complimentary tickets to every match as and when he pleases, to be quoted £400 for each ticket is simply ridiculous. At the very least, he should be offered a complimentary seat. However, Levy clearly doesn’t agree.

It seems as though Rangers were much more accommodating, despite the club not generating anywhere near as much money as Tottenham. Therefore, there is no excuse.

Hearing that Gascoigne would now prefer Rangers to beat Spurs would have no doubt hurt some supporters who grew up watching him. As a result, Levy’s popularity would have only decreased after these recent claims.

Paul Gascoigne issues update statement after hitting out at Tottenham

Gascoigne’s agent, Katie Davies, has since issued an updated statement, explaining via Standard Sport (16 October), “We should like to clarify that Paul’s comments are not an accurate reflection of his relationship with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, which has provided a huge amount of support to him over the years and always looks after its former players.

“In relation to the tickets, these were intended for associates of Paul and not for himself – Paul has never been charged by the club for a ticket to come to a match.

“We hope this draws a line under any misunderstanding on this matter and a positive dialogue is maintained moving forward.”

Whatever has really happened behind the scenes remains unclear. However, what is apparent is that Spurs have clearly upset Gascoigne in some way. Therefore, supporters would be right to ask questions of Levy.
