Liverpool had a rather quiet summer transfer window.
The Reds only made two major signings this summer in the shape of Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili, and neither player cost a fortune.
Liverpool had a quiet summer, but it feels as though a spending spree at Anfield could be on the horizon.
Liverpool went after Martin Zubimendi this summer, which wouldn’t have been a cheap deal, while the Reds did bid £111m for Moises Caicedo last summer, and that money is yet to be spent.
It stands to reason to believe that a superstar addition could be possible at Anfield next year, and according to Florian Plettenberg, Florian Wirtz is a player the Reds are keen on.
The journalist says that Wirtz wants to leave Bayer Leverkusen next summer, and while Manchester City are leading this race at the moment, Liverpool are also in the mix to sign the Germany star.
Liverpool interested in Florian Wirtz
According to Plettenberg, Liverpool are among the clubs interested in signing Wirtz.
However, as always, the German won’t be an easy target for the Reds to acquire.
Indeed, Bayer Leverkusen want to keep hold of Wirtz, but the attacker is seemingly set on leaving the German champions next summer.
Liverpool do have cash to spend, but they do face some serious competition from the likes of Manchester City for Wirtz, while Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in Wirtz.
How much will Florian Wirtz cost?
Wirtz is clearly a wanted man across the Premier League and across Europe, but a player of this calibre won’t be cheap.
According to Christian Falk, Leverkusen want £125m for Wirtz.
“That’s true. Arsenal are a major competitor. Arsenal have had Florian Wirtz on their radar for a long time,” Falk said.
“They watched him as a youth player at Koln, and now the interest is becoming really concrete again. However, I have my doubts that they will be able to do this deal. Leverkusen are calling for €150m (£125m). Will Arsenal pay that much? I am sceptical.”
Liverpool should have that amount of money spare after their failed pursuits of Caicedo and Zubimendi, but whether or not they want to splurge that much on a player like Wirtz remains to be seen.
