Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has returned to Saudi Arabia following his key role in Nigeria’s successful outings during the September international break, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 29-year-old centre-back skippered the Super Eagles in their opening two matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, delivering standout performances.

Troost-Ekong led Nigeria to a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin in Uyo, followed by a hard-fought goalless draw against Rwanda in Kigali.

His leadership at the heart of the defence was pivotal in helping the three-time African champions keep two clean sheets.

These positive results have placed Nigeria at the top of Group D, ahead of Benin, Rwanda, and Libya, positioning them well for qualification to the tournament.

This defensive solidity marks a welcome return to form for Nigeria, who had not managed a clean sheet since reaching the final of the 2023 AFCON, where Troost-Ekong was named the tournament’s best player – a rare accolade for a defender.

He became the first Nigerian to win the award since Christian Chukwu in 1980 when Nigeria lifted the AFCON trophy for the first time.

The Super Eagles had struggled defensively in Troost-Ekong’s absence due to injury, conceding in all four matches under coach Finidi George. However, his return has brought renewed confidence to the backline.

Troost-Ekong has since resumed training with Al-Kholood, the Saudi Arabian club he joined from Greek champions PAOK in August.

Despite his arrival, the club is still seeking its first league win of the season after narrow defeats to Al Ittihad and Al Riyadh. They will face Al Orubah this weekend, with Troost-Ekong aiming to inspire his side to victory.
