Wenham thrilled by 'Fantastic' Tottenham sale, he would have let him go for nothing

John Wenham was “delighted” to see Giovani Lo Celso leave Tottenham and return to Real Betis.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose would have let the 28-year-old go for free.

As confirmed via Spurs’ official website (30 August), Lo Celso re-signed for Betis after joining Tottenham from the La Liga side in 2019.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – claims the Argentinian never contributed anything of note during his five-year spell in North London.

“I’m absolutely delighted that Lo Celso is gone,” Wenham said.

“I would have let him go for nothing. Therefore, to get a fee and a first option to purchase Johnny Cardoso I think is a fantastic deal.

“Lo Celso was five months away from being able to agree a pre-contract to leave Spurs for free, which he would have done.

“He was a big earner who never contributed for Tottenham. As a result, I’m just glad he is gone.

“Now we won’t have fans now suggesting whether he could still make an impact, despite him having never done anything.”

Giovani Lo Celso leaves Tottenham and re-signs for Real Betis

Lo Celso is unlikely to be missed by many in North London.

He arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with high expectations. However, it is fair to say that he failed to live up to those expectations in quite dramatic style.

Lo Celso made just 108 appearances in five years, twice being sent out on loan by Spurs.

Ange Postecoglou clearly had no interest in keeping the player either. Therefore, this feels like the right move for everybody involved.

It leaves James Maddison as the club’s sole creative midfielder, and the Englishman will need to start showing an upturn in form if he wants to avoid the same fate as Lo Celso.

In other Tottenham news, one youth sensation deserves to be handed his first-team debut after a “superb” moment recently.
