John Wenham believes the transfer fee for Tottenham forward Wilson Odobert was “expensive.”
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose still thinks that the 19-year-old is an “exciting” addition to Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
Tottenham confirmed the signing of Odobert from Burnley via the club’s official website on Friday (16 August). Spurs paid a fee in the region of £25million for the France Under-21 international (via BBC Sport, 16 August).
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – was surprised by how much the winger cost.
“He was at the Olympics with France, which shows that they’re aware of his potential,” Wenham said.
“Last season he played 33 times in the Premier League, so he has got that experience behind him. I think he will get a lot of opportunities at Tottenham, especially in the UEFA Europa League.
“It is an exciting signing. However, I think his fee was expensive, it was perhaps a little much. I consider myself a bit of a football fanatic and I don’t remember him from his time with Burnley last season.
“However, I trust the scouting team at Tottenham. Our signings over the last 18 months have been good, so I expect this to be more of the same.”
Tottenham overpay for Wilson Odobert?
Odobert looked bright in his Spurs debut as Ange Postecoglou’s side thrashed Spurs 4-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (24 August).
The Australian starting the youngster demonstrated that he has plenty of faith in him, and supporters should therefore expect to see more of Odobert this season.
Paying £25million for a 19-year-old is a lot, and it leaves Odobert with a lot of pressure on his shoulders. However, if the Frenchman lives up to his potential, it will soon seem like quite the coup.
