Why Jaden Philogene will not miss Aston Villa's next game despite red card

Jaden Philogene picked up the first red card of his career in Aston Villa’s 3-1 win over Fulham on Saturday.

The Aston Villa No.19 was shown a second yellow card in the 93rd minute of Saturday’s clash at Craven Cottage, after Darren England adjudged him to have fouled Reiss Nelson – although replays showed the Fulham No.19 went down softly.

Unai Emery’s side sit fourth in the Premier League after securing their fifth win out of eight games.

Jaden Philogene will be suspended for one match after his red card, but interestingly, the 22-year-old will actually be able to play in Aston Villa’s next game.

Jaden Philogene free to face Bologna in UEFA Champions League

Aston Villa are in European action next up, as Emery welcomes Bologna to Villa Park in the UEFA Champions League.

As you may already know, only dismissals which occur in UEFA competitions apply to the UEFA Champions League, so despite Philogene – who rejected Everton – being sent off in the Premier League, he is allowed to face the Serie A side on Tuesday evening.

Conversely, any red cards picked up in European action do not carry into domestic football, meaning the Premier League, FA Cup or League Cup.

Unai Emery must start the Aston Villa No.19 against Bologna

Seeing as Philogene will have to sit out of Aston Villa’s clash against Bournemouth on Saturday 26th October, Emery would be wise to start the England U21 international on Tuesday.

If the Spaniard opts not to, it could mean the £18m summer signing from Hull City ends up missing two games, increasing the chance of him becoming rusty and heightening the potentiality of an injury occurring.

Of course, Emery may not want to come across like he’s rewarding Philogene – who Stan Collymore rates highly – for being sent off, but given the harsh nature in which England dismissed the winger on Saturday, it would surely improve the Aston Villa academy graduate’s mood to be given a start against Bologna.
