Andros Townsend admitted he worries about where Everton would be without Seamus Coleman as the Republic of Ireland took on England on Saturday (7 September).
While the 35-year-old struggled for minutes on the pitch last season, suffering from injuries, the pundit was full of praise for the Toffees’ captain as he started up against former teammate Anthony Gordon.
The full-back, who arrived at Goodison Park on a £60,000 deal from Sligo Rovers in 2009 [The Athletic], has gone on to play over 400 games for the Merseyside club, becoming a legend amongst the fans.
Speaking live on ITV 1 [7 September, 5:11pm] during live coverage of the Republic of Ireland vs England game, Townsend said: “He’s probably the greatest human being on earth.
“He’s a special human being, a great captain, a real old-school one.
“He does what needs to be done if players need to be called out. I worry where Everton would be without Seamus Coleman over the last three or four seasons.”
Seamus Coleman continues to lead at Everton
Despite his injury troubles at Goodison Park recently, the experienced full-back will certainly still play an important role behind the scenes, which has been hugely important recently.
The Toffees have skated on thin ice above the relegation zone on multiple occasions now, only just escaping in some scenarios while Sean Dyche worked wonders last season to finish 14 points above the dropzone.
With the threat of another points deduction, as per The Times, and Farhad Moshiri’s takeover drama, Coleman is one of the only consistent things on Merseyside, ever since his arrival in 2009.
The 35-year-old is much more of a leader now than he was when joining the club, and Everton fans could not imagine life without him, sharing a similar legacy to that of Leighton Baines.
If the Toffees are to avoid relegation once again, Coleman will need to play a huge role whether he is on the pitch, on the bench, or back in the treatment room.
Dyche cannot succeed without him.
In other Everton news, Kevin Thelwell could face questions if last-gasp signing fails this season.
