'Bad Blood' - Pundit blames Aberdeen for Barron exit as 'Really Fair' Rangers offer snubbed

Derek Ferguson believes Rangers have made a “really fair offer” to Aberdeen as compensation for Connor Barron.

The Daily Record reported on 26 June that the Dons had turned down £500,000 for the new Gers midfielder, who left Pittodrie this summer when his contract expired, and were willing to take the matter to a tribunal where they may get more.

That is the amount Aberdeen would have been guaranteed had the 21-year-old chosen to move to England or Europe, where he had offers, and Ferguson has pointed to “bad blood” between the two clubs as potentially getting in the way of an agreement.

Barron left the Dandies after coming through their academy to make 76 first-team appearances and ex-Ibrox midfielder Ferguson believes the club is responsible for letting his contract run down.

“I think it’s a real fair offer that Rangers have made,” he exclusively told Ibrox News

“If the boy goes down to England, which there was a lot of talk about, what is the fee for coming through the youth ranks?

“But there’s always been a kind of bad blood, a tension, between the two clubs for a number of years.

“When I heard Connor Barron was available, we’re gonna get him, I knew there would have to be a small fee paid.

“I just think Rangers have been willing to pay half a million, that’s down to Aberdeen, they let his contract run down. So I think it’s a really fair offer from Rangers.”

Rangers Philippe Clement
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has added Connor Barron as a nominal replacement for Ryan Jack.

Were it another club the Light Blues were negotiating with then the half-million would maybe have been accepted by now, but it looks like the Dons are going to play hard ball.

It is in their interest to soften the blow of losing Barron in the first place, especially to Ibrox, by trying to squeeze as much financial return out of the move as possible after the fact, even if they had plenty of time to work out a way to keep him.

Clement has got his man, in what looks like a very sensible move after the departures of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack, but it may end up proving more expensive than anticipated, seemingly vindicating the club’s fears over entering into negotiations for Bojan Miovski who they like as a possible striker addition this summer [Scottish Daily Mail, 1 July].

In other Rangers news, Clement has dropped a senior ace to the reserves and he will now likely be sold.
