BBC shares update with Rangers in talks over stadium switch as new complication emerges

Rangers are set for more talks with the Scottish FA over playing home fixtures at Hampden Park, according to BBC Sport.

Chris McLaughlin reports via the outlet’s website on 8 July that discussions are continuing, with initial talks having been held last week and more now planned.

The Light Blues announced on 20 June that delays to the Copland Road stand building work would force the club to play elsewhere to start the season.

According to the BBC any agreement to play matches at Hampden are dependent on the pitch’s readiness after it was re-turfed in the wake of summer concerts at the venue, while a further complication has emerged in the form of Queen’s Park’s agreement to use the stadium for their own games after Scotland’s 5 September clash with Poland in the Nations League.

No solution is going to be ideal and there may even be the possibility that Rangers have to play at multiple alternative venues thats to the fact that they are scrambling for an answer so late in the day.

It is little surprise that the disorganisation which means delayed building materials from Asia has set back the Ibrox renovations have been widely slammed and seen a senior member of staff sacked [Andy Newport, 20 June].

Philippe Clement might be able to get his Light Blues squad up and running efficiently despite the disruption but he could surely have done without an extra complication to deal with as he looks to bounce back from a hugely disappointing end to last season.

The Gers are already fighting an uphill battle as they look to overturn Celtic thanks to the gap in finances that only gets wider with each campaign finished behind their Old Firm rivals, and respective transfer developments.

Philippe Clement’s Rangers overhaul will be disrupted by the Ibrox saga.

So being forced to play away from home for weeks to open the new season, with some suggestions it could even be for longer than originally feared, is the last thing the Belgian will have wanted.

Queen’s Park no doubt have precedence in their claims on Hampden and the possibility that the pitch could be an issue is yet another factor that could prove to be a problem, so it appears to be a matter of finding the least-bad option from here on.

In other Rangers news, a senior British ace is now expected to be sold during the summer transfer window.
