Keith Jackson has dubbed Philippe Clement’s decision-making “bizarre” after what he did with Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi at Rangers.
The journalist cannot wrap his head around the Belgian’s constant efforts to shoehorn unsuitable players into the number 10 role, while Hagi is available.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline podcast [2 December], he hit out at Clement for offloading Cantwell despite the Englishman being comfortable in that position.
“Clement has been trying to shoehorn other players into that position and they find it foreign, they don’t have a natural gift or the sixth sense to know when to drop into space or a pocket, when to drop out wide to give the option of a pass.
“That comes naturally to Hagi and Hagi was their most likely creative player at the weekend. Hagi was getting forced out of the building a few weeks ago.
“Cantwell plays the position, Cantwell was forced out of the building, so it all feeds into the decision-making. It’s bizarre.”
Clement called out for forcing Todd Cantwell out of Rangers
Cantwell was an important player for the Light Blues under Michael Beale but saw his influence dwindle after Clement took the reins in October 2023.
The midfielder quickly grew frustrated with his situation at Ibrox, asking the Gers permission to leave twice in the summer [Sky Sports].
He went on to down tools and refuse to play to force a transfer [Scottish Daily Mail], eventually joining Blackburn Rovers in a £500,000 deal [The Athletic].
Some may say Cantwell forced his way out of Rangers and not the other way around, but it is evident that the player and the manager were not on good terms.
The former Norwich star has hit the ground running at Ewood Park, scoring one goal and providing three assists in 13 Championship games.
Clement’s Gers, meanwhile, find themselves 11 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership as they continue to struggle for consistency.
In other Rangers news, James Tavernier would be “raging” at his current situation at Ibrox, according to Alan Hutton.
