Nick McPheat believes that goalscoring still remains a “concern” for all those involved with Rangers, comparing the lack of goals scored to that of rivals Celtic.
The Gers are third in the Scottish Premiership and find themselves nine points adrift of their fellow title rivals Aberdeen and Celtic.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (15 November), BBC journalist McPheat shared his thoughts on Rangers’ “unconvincing” season so far.
“Despite returning to winning ways in the league last weekend, goalscoring remains a concern for Rangers,” he wrote.
“Philippe Clement’s men went into the international break with three points, but the nature of their laboured 1-0 victory over Hearts at Ibrox has become the theme of their unconvincing season.
“One reason for that is quite simple – they have not scored enough. The fact St Mirren, Dundee and Dundee United all have more than Rangers’ league tally of 16 goals paints a bleak picture.
“Granted, those three clubs have played more games than Clement’s side, but both Dundee teams still boast a better goals-per-game ratio.
“Meanwhile, leaders Celtic have scored almost double their city rivals’ amount and Aberdeen are eight ahead”.
Rangers need to bring a striker to Ibrox in January
In the summer, Philippe Clement’s team was chopped and changed in numerous ways.
Older players were shipped out upon the expiry of their contracts and the Belgian chose to bring in younger and more inexperienced players to try and help build for the Gers’ future.
Some of those who were brought in have taken like ducks to water and have settled in more than well, such as Connor Barron.
Players such as Hamza Igamane, however, are still fairly rough around the edges.
One of Clement’s priority areas for strengthening in the summer should have been his number nine role and, even though the Morocco international was brought in, he’s far from ready to challenge Cyriel Dessers for a starting role.
Indeed, it’s evident that he has a bright future ahead of him from the few glimpses of talent he’s shown this term, but unless Clement brings in another striker who’s ready for first-team action in January, it feels like he may as well kiss Rangers’ title hopes goodbye.
