Celtic captain Callum McGregor’s comments about this season’s aspirations for have been labelled an “embarrassment.”
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed it was “wrong” for the central midfielder to say the team is prioritising the Scottish Premiership.
In an interview with Celtic TV, the 31-year-old claimed that the priority for next season is on the league, and that will always be the case.
That’s because winning the league guarantees Champions League football for the following season, which is what the Hoops want to achieve each time.
Celtic have won the Scottish Premiership three years in a row heading into this season, and McGregor played a significant role in all of them.
However, the Scottish side finished bottom of their Champions League group and crashed out of Europe after winning just one game.
Celtic captain Callum McGregor should have bigger ambitions
Celtic have won the Scottish Premiership 54 times throughout their history, but it was the 1966-67 season that they last won a European trophy.
“It’s an embarrassment for the captain to say that because the league’s a given for every team,” McAvennie told Football Insider.
“Callum’s wrong to say that because people spend an awful lot of money to go and watch Champions League games.
“It’s great that the club they get there to get in the Champions League, so why not make a statement? Why not make Celtic Park a fortress again? It used to be.
“People say, ‘Oh, Martin O’Neil’s team,’ when I played there, we hardly got beat at Celtic Par; it was a fortress, the fans behind you it was great nights.
“It doesn’t seem to be the same case now. Listen, this is what I want; I’m not going to say win the Champions League, we’re not going to do that.
“We’re not going to get a run in the Europa League, not yet.
“But my idea of getting, which Celtic should be, they should be in the group stage, they should get through the group stage into the last 16 and if they get beat, they drop down to the Europa League.”
