Celtic news: McAvennie makes 'massive' Luke McCowan claim

Celtic new boy Luke McCowan is a ‘dying breed’ after scoring his first goal for the club in their 2-0 win over Hearts on Saturday (September 14).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie sees himself in the 26-year-old saying it’s ‘brilliant’ to see a boyhood supporter play and score for the club he loves but admits he’s not ready for a starting place just yet.

McCowan came off the bench to replace record-signing and fellow scorer Arne Engles on the 80th minute before slotting home past Craig Gordon just nine minutes later.

The central midfielder, who joined the Celtic from Dundee FC late on transfer deadline day for a fee of £1million, took just 113 minutes to bag his first goal for the club.

The current champions are already well on their way to a fifth Scottish Premier League title, winning all five of their league games without conceding a single goal.

Aberdeen, who also have a 100 per cent record, are behind them in second with arch-rivals Rangers lagging behind in 3rd.

“I was that boy years ago when I signed for Celtic”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I know exactly what he feels like, he got his goal quicker than me so I’m delighted for the boy.

“He’s walking about, even when he’s not on a training field or a football field, with a massive smile on his face.

“It’s brilliant because I thought it was a dying breed, seeing people play for their boyhood team.

“This boy, I tell you what, he’s another one now they have five for three positions but I don’t think he’s ready yet to get a starting place.

“It took Paulo Bernardo about six months, they kept bringing him on until he got up to speed.

“Every day you’ve got to win, every day you’ve got to compete, there are no half measures when you’re at a club like Celtic.

“It might take him a wee bit of time and once he’s got that smile off his face he’ll be able to settle in and enjoy it, that’s the main thing.

“There are a lot of firsts for him, people asking him for an autograph, people coming to his dad’s door for an autograph.

“He’s enjoying it, long may it continue and I think he’s going to be another good player for us.”
