Celtic fans are delighted that the club could soon bring back their former captain Kieran Tierney, as rumours link him with a return.
The left-back made his first Arsenal start since August 2023 in last night’s Carabao Cup match against Crystal Palace.
Injuries and inconsistent selection have disrupted his momentum, and he sustained another injury that led to his substitution after 69 minutes.
Almost immediately after full-time, reports emerged that the Gunners will not be extending his contract beyond the end of the season [The Athletic]. This allows the Scotsman to leave on a free transfer in the summer and negotiate with clubs come January.
Sky Sports reported this morning that Celtic are interested in bringing the former captain back to the club to reunite him with Brendan Rodgers.
Celtic fans would welcome a return to Kieran Tierney
The Bhoys clinched the Scottish League Cup on 15 December with a win against rivals Rangers on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw. A controversial decision not to award their opponents a penalty has sparked calls for an unprecedented replay. However, Rodgers and the fans are already celebrating the first trophy this season.
Currently nine points clear in the Scottish Premiership, the Northern-Irish coach remains ambitious and reportedly plans to “test the board” with January signings. Tierney could be part of that strategy.
Their current left-back options, Greg Taylor and Alex Valle, each face uncertain futures. Taylor’s contract expires in 2025, while Valle is on loan from Barcelona.
Tierney made the switch to North London in 2019 for a Scottish record of £25million [BBC Sport]. He amassed 170 appearances, winning four Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups.
Fans are excited by the prospect of his return. One supporter called the potential combination of options at left-back “unreal” while another said they would “take him in a heartbeat” but also urged the club to “secure another left-back” for added depth.
His injury record is a cause of some concern so the possibility of special deal where the defender is on one wage when available and another if ruled out was raised, while apparent “resentment” at Arsenal at Tierney’s regular lay-offs after a big-money move is highlighted as not his “fault”.
In other news, the Scottish government could speak to Celtic fans over a League Cup final incident.
