Chris Sutton has refused to rule Rangers out of the Premiership title race after Celtic’s draw with Aberdeen.

Philippe Clement’s side face Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October) as they look to close the gap to the top of the table after Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops drew 2-2 with the Dons at Parkhead on Saturday (19 October).

While a win at Rugby Park would still leave the Gers with a three-point gap to Celtic and Jimmy Thelin’s side, BBC Sport pundit Sutton admits Philippe Clement’s side have a chance of winning the title.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live’s 606 (19 October, 3:00) he said: “You have to take Jimmy Thelin’s men seriously this season.

“You think Rob, last season seventh place, he’s come in and they’re still unbeaten this season but to go two goals down, make positive changes at halftime.

“Aberdeen fans, do you believe you can win the title? Challenge Celtic and finish above Rangers?

Robbie Savage responded: “If Rangers win, does that bring them back into it?”

Sutton replied: “I wouldn’t rule Rangers out already Rob, but they play Kilmarnock tomorrow.”

Can Rangers beat Celtic to the title after Parkhead draw v Aberdeen?

While the clash at Rugby Park was always going to be important in the story of Rangers’ season, it has become even more interesting after developments at Parkhead in the last 24 hours.

Aberdeen have shown that they are not just here to make up the numbers this term. With a bit more luck, they could have claimed all three points against Rodgers’ side so they have to be taken seriously.

Philippe Clement’s side cannot afford to drop any more points after their slow start to the domestic season and that starts against Derek McInnes’s side on Sunday. Three points against Kilmarnock would thrust the Light Blues straight back into title contention.

Last season, the Gers let opportunities like this pass them by without grabbing them. The coming weeks will show whether or not Clement’s team have learned from their mistakes last term.

Hopefully, the outcome will be much more positive this time around.
