Clement reveals how he blocked January exit for player who's now quit Rangers

Philippe Clement has revealed that Robby McCrorie was desperate to leave Rangers in January but he blocked a deal from going through.

The Belgian has been quoted by the Daily Record (12 July) as saying that the 26-year-old was close to a winter transfer away from Ibrox in the winter transfer window.

The goalkeeper has now confirmed a transfer to Kilmarnock in a move which Clement helped to push through quickly this summer.

He said: “I knew Robby McCrorie was desperate to go in January. I stopped him in January.

“We helped him to act fast in this window because it’s important with European games to come he trains with his new team at Kilmarnock.”

With Jack Butland being as good as he is, there has been a general lack of chances for other shot-stoppers in between the sticks at Ibrox.

The Englishman was a standout under Clement last season in a campaign which fell away towards the end as Celtic won everything.

After signing on a free transfer from Crystal Palace, nobody could have forecast just how good the 31-year-old would go on to be.

This saw McCrorie limited to just one appearance across the course of last season which clearly isn’t enough for the 26-year-old.

As a goalkeeper, his career will likely last longer than an outfield option but he isn’t willing to wait around to become a first-choice option.

In a move to Kilmarnock, the Scot will be hoping that in the next campaign, he will feature regularly with European competition on the cards at Rugby Park.

With Liam Kelly already through the doors at Ibrox, the Gers have prepared early for the exit of McCrorie this summer.
