Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy could only laugh after an Everton fan compared Dwight McNeil to Chris Brunt and Ryan Giggs.
The 24-year-old starred in the Toffees vital 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Goodison Park on Saturday 28 September, scoring both goals to overturn Marc Guehi’s opener.
McNeil hit the back of the net both times with his left foot, leading to a fan calling into talkSPORT and comparing the player to former West Brom star Brunt.
Reacting to the claim, both Cundy and O’Hara said in unison: “Chris Brunt?!”, before the latter carried on: “Chris Brunt was a good player but come on… Is he your brother or something?”
Cundy followed that up, saying: “Go on, say someone like Giggs,” to which the fan quickly said: “Giggs” making both go into fits of laughter.
Dwight McNeil the hero as Everton beat Crystal Palace at Goodison Park
Sean Dyche’s side were in desperate need of their first Premier League win of the season, with the Toffees sitting one spot above the bottom of the table until the clash against the Eagles.
Three points have seen the Merseyside club rise to fifteenth in the table, having only been able to claim a single point against Leicester City in their first five games of the new season.
Performances have been positive in recent weeks, especially during the 3-2 defeats to both Bournemouth and Aston Villa, and the Toffees have finally turned that into a vital win.
McNeil can certainly be thanked for that, hitting the back of the net just two minutes into the second half following a poor opening 45 minutes, then completing the turnaround just seven minutes later.
It remains to be seen how the star would feel about being compared to Brunt, though Giggs would be a much more favourable comparison in terms of footballing ability and legendary status.
