Darwin Nunez could land lengthy Liverpool ban - ex-PL CEO

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes Liverpool star Darwin Nunez could land an extended suspension for his role in the brawl after the Copa America game between Uruguay and Colombia.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the 25-year-old could receive a lengthy ban following the altercation.

Footage filmed by fans in the stands showed Nunez taking a punch from a Colombia fan before throwing one back himself during the unsavoury scenes.

The South American Confederation (CONMEBOL) is currently investigating the post-match violence, with the Uruguayan believed to be one of 11 players facing disciplinary action.

Colombia secured a 1-0 victory in the Copa America semi-final clash before going on to lose the final to Argentina.

Liverpool may need to sign new striker to replace Darwin Nunez

Wyness suggested Liverpool may have to bring in a new striker this summer if Nunez is banned for his involvement in the incident.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “We will have to see if there is any suspension for one of the players from Copa America after the crowd issues.

“It could well be a long-term ban there for Nunez.

“Once that clears a little bit, I still think forwards are going to be a key area.

“They haven’t really been firing as we saw last season.

“Midfield still seems one spark away from being good, but I still think the issues are in defence.”

In other news, Liverpool set sights on signing two goalkeepers.
